You are all so funny and cute and sweet and just great! I’m on my way to work, post- vacation. Today is my first day back and I’m frankly, dragging my feet. The chuckles I’ve gotten so far from all of you have given me the extra push to go out the door.
Before I left for Japan, I rounded up all SX-70s that had one or two shots left over in the cartridges, packed them in the trunk of my car and while out and about for lunch and work I would stop and take quick snaps of a handful of old signs I really love. Most of them here in Seattle, near Children’s Hospital and in the Ballard and Wallingford areas.
So I’ll be uploading those in the coming weeks, sprinkled in between the Japan photos. Oy! Must dash to work. Have a great day everyone! :)
nice photo, but i’ll tell you, i have never liked dick’s food. some of the most disgusting i’ve ever tasted. i don’t know why anyone would go there when there’s red mill.
mmmmmmm. red mill. i’m hoping to find a comparable burger place here in dc.
Personally, I do not eat at Dick’s. I just love the sign. My favorite burger in the city is the Palace Burger at Palace Kitchen right here in my downtown neighborhood but lately I’ve been absolutely head over heels with the amazing burgers Scott Simpson (of Fork fame) whips out at Lunchbox Laboratory in Ballard. Their lamb burger in particular is out of sight. :)
To each his own. I can’t stand Red Mill — not the burgers, not the restaurant, not anything about the place. Dick’s is far from the best burger, but it’s better than other fast-food places, as opposed to “gourmet” burgers like Palace Kitchen. It’s better than most of those, too, though. My favorite burger, by a wide margin, comes off of my grill at home!
You are so right, Fnarf! My favorite burger (non-restaurant) is the one Mr. C makes at home. We buy everything fresh, organic, local, from the market. Mix up our own fresh ground beefs, add all sorts of red pepper flakes, garlic, spices, onion and sometimes a bit of Point Reyes or goat cheese and cook them on our grill. A side of asparagus or grilled veggies or red potatoes or a seasonal salad or just a pickle and good chips and all we need is good friends and a nice glass of Lambic or red wine. Yum!
I think for most of us Dicks isnt about a “great” hamburger… more about the americana and memories (who tell me WHO has gone to UW and not had a greasy late run to Dicks?? :))
I drove by here a couple weeks ago and the “D” was out on the neon sign above the restaurant so it read “icks” - I was kicking myself for not having my camera on me - but it did make me laugh the whole way home!
Ick’s! Ha ha! I can imagine your frustration. I try to always have some sort of camera with me. Usually more than one. But there is always that rare occasion when it happens that there is a photo op that catches one without a camera. Talk about ick! :)
Thanks Rebecca! I should probably have some breakfast. Looking at it again is making me hungry. :)

Good? The best. Well, fast-food best. Coupla Deluxes and a bag o’ fries really hits the spot.

Thanks Amy and Charlyn and miss stinkerbell! Who knew people would have such a visceral reaction to a hamburger joint sign, huh? So interesting.
I’m shooting Burgermaster’s next. And Kidd Valley too. Ha ha!
I drove by here a couple weeks ago and the “D” was out on the neon sign above the restaurant so it read “icks” - I was kicking myself for not having my camera on me - but it did make me laugh the whole way home!
Oh hell yeah. This is just too great.

Oh, how I miss that fine establishment.
Hey Seth, did you use to study or live in Seattle? I had no idea. How long ago! Glad it triggered some memories… (fine establishment made me laugh).
